  4. Coronavirus very likely of animal origin, no sign of lab manipulation: WHO GENEVA (Reuters) - The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday that all available evidence suggests the novel coronavirus originated in animals in China late last year and was not manipulated or produced in a laboratory. U.S. President Donald Trump said last week that his government was trying to determine whether the virus emanated from a lab in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, where the coronavirus pandemic emerged in December. "All available evidence suggests the virus has an animal origin and is not manipulated or constructed in a lab or somewhere else," WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib told a Geneva news briefing. "It is probable, likely, that the virus is of animal origin." It was not clear, Chaib added, how the virus had jumped the species barrier to humans but there had "certainly" been an intermediate animal host. "It most likely has its ecological reservoir in bats but how the virus came from bats to humans is still to be seen and discovered." She did not respond to a request to elaborate on whether it was possible the virus may have inadvertently escaped from a lab. The Wuhan Institute of Virology has dismissed rumours both that it synthesized the virus or allowed it to escape. Chaib, asked about the impact of Trump's decision last week to suspend funding to the U.N. agency over its handling of the coronavirus pandemic, said: "We are still assessing the situation about the announcement by President Trump ...and we will assess the situation and we will work with our partners to fill any gaps." "It is very important to continue what we are doing not only for COVID but for many, many, many, many other health programmes," she added, referring to action against polio, HIV and malaria among other diseases. She said that the WHO was 81 percent funded for the next two years as of the end of March, referring to its $4.8 billion biennial budget. The United States is the Geneva-based agency's biggest donor. Other big contributors are the Gates Foundation and Britain. source: https://ca.news.yahoo.com/coronavirus-very-likely-animal-origin-102612087.html

  6. How to wash clothes during the COVID-19 crisis Whether you’re leaving the house to exercise or spend time outdoors, or if you’re someone that works in a pharmacy, grocery store or in healthcare, you need to make sure you’re taking proper care to ensure your clothes are safe once you enter your home. While there’s no definitive evidence regarding the lifespan on COVID-19 on clothes, the virus is known to cling to other materials. According to the National Institute of Health, the virus can live up to 24 hours on cardboard and even two to three days on plastic and stainless steel. While your clothes are mostly comprised of fabric, they also have details like metal zippers and buttons, where the coronavirus can linger for longer than on more porous materials. Of course, if you work in a field where you’re forced to interact with people — say a grocery store or in healthcare — or if you’re the caretaker of a person that has tested positive for the coronavirus, you should take extra precautions. The CDC advises wearing disposable gloves when handling dirty laundry, which you should discard after use. If you have reusable gloves, make sure those are the designated gloves for disinfection and cleaning, and don’t use them for anything else around the house. Make sure to wash your hands after removing the gloves, too. When doing your laundry, make sure to use the warmest appropriate water setting, then be sure to dry as thoroughly as possible. If you are the caretaker for an ill person, you can wash their dirty laundry in the same load. Make sure not to shake dirty clothes, as it can potentially disperse the virus through the air. If you’re using a clothes hamper, the CDC advises to clean it using a mixture of bleach and water — specifically, five tablespoons of bleach per gallon of water or four teaspoons of bleach per quart of water. If possible, line your hamper with disposable bag liners, which you should throw away after each use. If you don’t have a washing machine at home and have to use the laundromat, make sure you wear gloves when touching the stainless steel and chrome handles and rolling baskets. Don’t worry about the coronavirus lingering inside the machine — the wash cycle will help stop it in its tracks. source: https://ca.style.yahoo.com/coronavirus-life-span-clothes-172319910.html

  12. Netflix’s frightening thriller “Bird Box” scored the biggest seven-day viewership of all the streamer’s original movie releases to date — with just over 45 million member accounts having watched the movie in the first week, the company claimed Friday. The movie bowed Dec. 21 worldwide on Netflix, and became an instant — if traumatizing — Christmas Day family-viewing experience for some. The Sandra Bullock-starrer also has spawned a raft of internet memes since its release. In “Bird Box,” Bullock is a single mom trying to save her kid’s lives after mysterious forces invade Earth and causes people to kill themselves. Survivors navigating the post-apocalyptic world must wear blindfolds or be exposed to supernatural entities that embody their deepest fears. “Took off my blindfold this morning to discover that 45,037,125 Netflix accounts have already watched Bird Box — best first 7 days ever for a Netflix film!” the Netflix Film account on Twitter boasted Friday.
  13. Latest news... Party-list congressman Aniceto Bertiz III, who has been under fire after his video harassing a screener of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) during security check went viral online, was rushed to the hospital on Tuesday due to chest pains.
  14. MANILA, Philippines — A party-list lawmaker caught on video bullying an airport screener said yesterday he is returning the access pass given to him by the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA). ACTS-OFW party-list Rep. Aniceto Bertiz III was seen on the surveillance video at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on Saturday refusing to remove his shoes at the final security checkpoint, shoving his access pass in the Office of Transportation Security (OTS) personnel’s face and then snatching the screener’s identification card. “Ipapa-surrender ko na ‘to (I will surrender this). To be fair, I don’t want my fellow congressmen and other holders of my ID na madamay pa (to be involved),” he said. Bertiz said he also wants to apologize to the OTS screener, identified as Hamilton Abdul. He said he only showed his access pass to the screener because it was the only ID card in his bag at the time. “Patawarin mo ako sa aking inasal. Hindi tama ‘yun para sa isang kinatawan ng gobyerno (Forgive me for my behavior. It is not right for a government official),” he said, addressing his apology to the screener. The MIAA said Bertiz has not surrendered the access pass as of 6 p.m. MIAA general manager Ed Monreal yesterday said the airport pass given to Bertiz is a privilege and can be revoked in case of abuse. He said Bertiz holds an airport pass that gives him access to NAIA Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 4 but not to the general aviation, ramp and other areas off-limits to the public. Monreal said when Bertiz told him about the incident and his complaint, “without knowing the facts, nag-apologize ako sa kanya (I apologized to him.)” The MIAA chief, stressed, however, that the airport screener did nothing wrong. “I stand by what he did,” he said. The lawmaker is facing an ethics complaint at the House of Representatives in connection with the incident. Bertiz drew flak anew yesterday, this time for making “sexist” remarks on women’s menstrual cycles. On Monday, he attributed his outburst at NAIA to “monthly periods” he gets once a year. “Naging dialogue ko na lang iyun sa wife ko na kapag may topak: Monthly period ba ngayon (It’s just my dialogue with my wife that when she has a tantrum: is she on her monthly period)? Yeah, that was very stupid. Sa mga hanay ng kababaihan: Isa pa iyun na humihingi ako ng tawad (To the women: I am asking forgiveness for this),” Bertiz said in an interview with “The Source” over CNN Philippines. Gabriela party-list Rep. Emmi de Jesus said the issue is Bertiz’s arrogance. “Women should not be stereotyped as arrogant and entitled during their menstrual period,” she said in a statement. “He should not involve women because he is the one with the problem.” Everywoman, another women’s group, said Bertiz’s justification for his behavior is “ludicrous.” “Science has shown that sexism is the refuge of the abusive and domineering,” the group stated, adding that “this lie about women’s irrationality is just a fantasy made up by men like Bertiz to cover up that they cannot compete with most men and women.” Everywoman said the only thing normal about Bertiz is “that he has become the norm of how a public official should behave under a regime that thrives on misogyny, precisely because hatred of the poor, of women, of the disabled is the only thing left for it to feed its supporters.” Answering calls for Bertiz’s ouster, Commission on Elections spokesman James Jimenez tweeted that it is the party-list organization that should determine who should be its representative in the House source: Philstar.com news website
  15. UFC 229: Post-fight brawl mars Khabib Nurmagomedov's submission win over Conor McGregor A bout that was made when Conor McGregor attacked a bus ended with lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov leaping over the Octagon at T-Mobile Arena after a brilliant performance in the main event of UFC 229 and brawling with Dillon Danis, a member of McGregor’s team, at cageside. Nurmagomedov submitted McGregor with a rear naked choke at 3:03 of the fourth before a melee broke out at cageside. According to UFC broadcaster Joe Rogan, Danis was taunting Nurmagomedov from cageside, though Rogan couldn’t hear what Danis said. A huge scrum of people got together near the Octagon, including police officers, members of both teams and members of the Nevada Athletic Commission. It was against the fence where fans were seated. Nurmagomedov and Danis exchanged punches as people attempted to separate them. After the scrum was broken up after about 10 minutes, UFC president Dana White said to Nurmagomedov in the cage, “People are going to get arrested tonight.” Nurmagomedov responded, “Put me in jail. No problem.” White said to Nurmagomedov, “This is what I believe: If I put this belt on you, everybody’s going to start throwing s–t into the Octagon.” Not long after Nurmagomedov went after Danis, a man in a black T-shirt got into the Octagon and threw a least one punch at McGregor. Then, a man in a red T-shirt jumped over the cage and landed four punches on McGregor. It did not appear that McGregor ever left the cage. According to White, three members of Nurmagomedov’s team were arrested. White also told reporters that Nevada’s fighting commission is currently withholding Nurmagomedov’s fight check, although McGregor received his paycheck. It made the most hyped fight in UFC history somewhat anticlimactic. Nurmagomedov controlled the bout and had McGregor on his back for much of it. McGregor had a better third round and kept the fight standing, but never landed a significant punch. In the fourth, Nurmagomedov took McGregor down and worked to get his back. After he got his back, he quickly put on a rear-naked choke and forced a quick tap. When Nurmagomedov released the hold, he got up and immediately raced to the side of the cage, leaped over and appeared to go after Danis. Nurmagomedov was pulled from the scrum after about five minutes and escorted to the back. McGregor did not appear to get involved. He was removed from the Octagon with a heavy police and security presence after about 15 minutes. Nurmagomedov controlled the fight nearly the entire way. He kept McGregor on the canvas for much of the first two rounds, and actually dropped McGregor with a right hand in the second. SOURCE: Yahoo Sports Videos after the bout...
